Rapid Software Testing for Managers

How to effectively manage a test project under time pressure and conditions of uncertainty

Personally delivered by the creator of this MasterClass, James Bach.

Rapid Software Testing for Managers is a MasterClass about a mission-focused, credible and accountable approach to test management that is very fast, inexpensive and that delivers excellent results. The goal of this MasterClass is to teach you how to respond with the management action appropriate to your context while recognising the near-universal situation: testing is almost always done under extreme time pressure and conditions of uncertainty.

Based on the rapid software methodology developed by James Bach and building on his Rapid Software Testing course, this MasterClass answers the questions managers frequently ask about how to run a rapid testing effort such as how to staff, plan and run testing projects more quickly, less expensively and entirely accountably.

The skills presented in this class are applicable in any kind of test project, from Agile to traditional, but will be especially valuable in those projects where time and resources are scarce.

Intended For

While the target audience for this MasterClass is primarily test managers and test leads, it is also useful for senior testers and any other managers interested in testing.

Prerequisites

Must have attended our three day MasterClass Rapid Software Testing by James Bach.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this MasterClass, participants will be able to:

  • plan and prepare a test project when product information is incomplete or unreliable
  • estimate and negotiate for the resources you need
  • design and defend a rapid, risk-based test strategy
  • plan incrementally and apply exploratory testing approaches
  • establish a productive relationship with programmers
  • be an effective advocate for testability, testing and quality
  • supervise testers and be accountable for their work
  • create a diversified team and guide its members toward building skill
  • report project status to indicate progress and prompt the right questions.

Content

This MasterClass is designed to be modular, responding to issues you're facing in your organisational context. It will examine the following:

  • Activity-based Test Management: Session-based and thread-based (instead of obsessing over test cases)
  • Test Estimation: Factors and heuristics
  • Testing Metrics: The bad, the ugly and the fairly presentable
  • Testing Dashboard: Status reporting without pseudo-science
  • Risk-based Test Strategy: The heuristic approach
  • Developer Relations: Playing a supporting role, advocating for testability
  • Bug Triage: Making the case for a fix
  • Developing your test team: Hiring, coaching and troubleshooting

Method Used

This MasterClass is taught through experiential exercises, puzzles and scenarios, along with short presentations, conversation and some actual testing and reporting.
